Anxiety and Anxious

Friday and Saturday I will be attending a medical conference on anxiety disorders (some of the topics are making me anxious just looking at them!). So my blog may look a bit lean over the next two days, just because I will be at the Convention Center from early morning until early evening. That’s a lot of anxiety. Looking over the schedule, I can’t believe that there are this many topics to discuss on anxiety disorders.

And if going to an anxiety conference isn’t enough, I just got an assignment to ghost a paper (for a doctor) pediatric dermatitis. It makes me itchy just thinking about it. I can already see the hives breaking out…

The Ideology of the STD

So what more can we say about abstinence only sex-ed? Well, the most eminent infectious disease doctors in the nation think it’s a really bad idea. And what is really painful is to watch Bush try to slash and cut various government programs–everything from Veteran’s benefits, to education, to scholarships, to food stamps–on the pretext of balancing the budget. But yet, he is throwing $170 million towards abstinence only education, and this year, is actually INCREASING the amount by $39 million.

Another $39 million. Just think of what use that money can be used for, like maybe increasing benefits for disabled veterans, or providing funding for childcare?

Anyway, The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) has issued a joint press release, condemning the current disastrous approach to dealing with STDs.

HIV and ID Doctors Oppose Ideologically Driven STI Prevention Policies

HIV and infectious disease experts are urging the federal government to stop funding unproven strategies, like abstinence-only sexual health education, to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STI).

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) say these programs must be replaced with STI prevention policies that are based on sound science, not ideology.

Federal funding for programs teaching abstinence until marriage as the only way to avoid STIs has been increasing since the late 1990s, to nearly $170 million this year. An increase of $39 million is included in President George W. Bush’s 2006 budget proposal. Furthermore, US law requires the $15 billion program providing AIDS relief to developing countries to allocate one-third of its prevention funds to abstinence-only education.

However, there is very little credible, peer-reviewed, published scientific evidence that abstinence-only sexual health education programs can prevent STIs. The preponderance of evidence backs comprehensive sex education programs that address the correct and consistent use of condoms.

“There’s no doubt that the best way to prevent sexually transmitted infections is to abstain from sexual activity, or to be in a monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner. But we have to face reality,” says Walter E. Stamm, MD, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). “Most teenagers have sex before they graduate from high school. Millions of young people, as well as adults, are sexually active outside of monogamous relationships. We need to supply them with the tools to make wise choices.”

“When spending taxpayer dollars, the federal government has an obligation to provide accurate information to sexually active people,” adds Paul Volberding, MD, chair of the HIV Medicine Association Board of Directors. “The evidence shows using condoms reduces the risk of STIs. The evidence just doesn’t support abstinence-only education.”

The two organizations have approved a policy statement, available online at www.idsociety.org and www.hivma.org, calling for science-based government policies on preventing HIV and other STIs. The statement comes in response to a spate of ideologically driven federal policies, including evidence that federally funded abstinence programs promote misinformation about condoms and sexual risks, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s revision of their condom fact sheet to qualify the efficacy of condoms in STI prevention, and, congressional efforts to challenge peer-reviewed federal research grants addressing issues of human sexuality.

A large body of scientific evidence links correct and consistent condom use with prevention of HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes. A growing number of studies show condoms reduce the impact of HPV infection.

IDSA and HIVMA are calling for legislation funding abstinence-only education programs to be modified to reflect scientific evidence. They also call for repeal of the requirement that one-third of prevention funds in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief be targeted to abstinence-only programs.

Dr. Volberding notes, “The number of new HIV infections in the United States was as high last year as it ever was. We are struggling to control this pandemic. We need to use every tool available to prevent new infections. Telling people to ‘just say no’ just doesn’t work.”

“Ideology should not be driving our STI prevention strategy,” adds Dr. Stamm. “Science should. For the sake of public health, the federal government has a responsibility to provide comprehensive information about how to control sexually transmitted infections.”

The Infectious Diseases Society of America is a professional society representing nearly 8,000 physicians and scientists who specialize in infectious diseases. Nested within the IDSA, the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) is the professional home for more than 2,700 physicians, scientists and other health care professionals dedicated to the field of HIV/AIDS. HIVMA promotes quality in HIV care and advocates policies that ensure a comprehensive and humane response to the AIDS pandemic informed by science and social justice. Loves Nurses, But Hates ‘Dem Damn Unions

Governor Ahnold becomes more endearing each and every day. In a nationally televised interview, he pronounced his undying love for both teachers and nurses, but their unions can go to hell. It sort of reminds me of my mother, when she used to say that she liked kittens but hated cats. So, I said, what do you when the kittens grow up?

The Governator apparently thinks that nurses and teachers (not sure of his views on firefighters, since they have also joined the war on Arnold) are cute cuddly things, sort of like little wind-up dolls. As long as they’ll just sit on his lap and bat their eyelashes and go “Oh, Ahhhhnold, you are soooo precious and wonderful,” he loves them. But if they start to get uppity, like dare to demand a living wage and decent working conditions, well, then Arnold strikes back. Get rid of your unions or you die. I may be an obsolete model but I am still the Terminator…..

Ah, poor Arnold. The tears just flow as I think of him battling all of those nasty unions. Shame on them for not being willing to give up their hard-fought-for benefits and wages. Arnold has made many enemies. He is no longer the sweetheart of California. It has reached the point where he is now relegated to entering buildings through service entrances. Once upon a time, the red carpet was rolled out for him, and he entered through the front door, to adoring crowds showering him with roses and kisses. Now he slinks into back doors, as what happened during his recent fund-raiser in Sacramento, when 1,500 people encircled the hotel. The great governor crawled into the hotel through a back alley. Gee, how times are changing, Arnold. I wonder why.

A Whole New California

Speaking in an appearance on the MSNBC political talk show “Hardball,” Schwarzenegger indicated he was preparing for an election this year, joking with host Chris Matthews that campaigns would help stimulate the economy.

“By calling a special election, which we’re going to do very soon, we have created a whole new industry in California,” said Schwarzenegger, who was interviewed by Matthews in a live appearance at Stanford University. “They’re gathering signatures, hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent.”

His “whole new industry,” aka The Brave New World Order of California, includes such benefits to citizens as redrawing voting districts, changing pensions for state workers (for the worse), and changing the way teachers are paid (for the worse), and trying to dismantle the nurse:patient ratio law. He has ignited the wrath of multiple unions across the state–although I wonder what SAG (Screen Actors Guild) thinks of all this. Arnold is a member of SAG, so perhaps they’ll revoke his membership.

Now, in his next blundering move, Arnold proclaims to love nurses and teachers but hates the unions that represent them. Duh, I guess no one ever told Arnold that the union ranks are filled by those very same nurses and teachers that he adores. But I guess in an Arnold-centric world, only bad girls and boys join unions.

“They (the unions) want to stop progress, and we have to stop that, create a balance,” he said. “They’re beating up on businesses and chasing everyone away from the state.”

What kind of progress are they stopping, Arnold? Like nurses not wanting to take care of 100 patients per shift? Like patients wanting to be cared for by a nurse who is not about to short-circuit? Like teachers wanting to keep their pensions and pay? Gee, tragic. So sorry that they’re getting in your way.

While refusing to take money from unions, he has attended fund-raisers sponsored by wealthy business people and corporate lobbyists. When pressed Monday by Matthews about why unions were special interests and drug companies — big contributors to Schwarzenegger — weren’t, the governor seemed to change his definition.

“Anyone that is putting a wedge between a legislator, or a politician that is supposed to make decisions on behalf of the people, and the people, is a special interest. If it is a union, or if it is a drug company, it makes no difference,” he said.

How is that for a garbled response? Unions are a special interest group because they didn’t give him money, and they’re stabbing him with that wedge because his plans are to destroy middle class California. On the other hand, drug companies are not special interest because they line his pockets with gold, and they fully support his efforts because his proposals benefit them. Is that what you meant to say, Arnold?

“Arnold Corporate Whore” “Kindergarten Cop Terminates Education.”

Those are names of endearment for Arnold. They decorated some of the signs being held up at one of the protests. I am really shocked at Arnold’s total disregard for California children. In his past life, before he turned into a politician scumball, Arnold did such good work with kids. But now, he seems intent on destroying any last vestige of public education in the state.

Well, Arnold has severely misjudged his adversaries. He thought he could walk all over those nice, cute little nursies, but what he got was a kick in the balls. With a lead foot aimed right at the bull’s eye. The California Nurses Association ran an advertising blitz, organized protests, and sued him. AND THEY WON THE LAWSUIT! The judge ruled in their favor that Arnold had no business putting a hold on the nurse:patient ratio law.

So how does it feel to have your first defeat, Arhnold? At the rate you’re going, a lot more are on the horizon.

Now, the state’s largest teachers union, the California Teachers Association, has started their own advertising campaign, spending more than $2.5 million on television and radio spots. The ads accuse the governor of breaking his promise to schoolchildren. And it seems that he did just that.

Schwarzenegger brokered a deal with the education community last year in which they agreed to take a $2 billion reduction in funds, but would receive their share of any new revenue that came in. When the governor released his budget this year, he said he could not keep that promise and continue to afford health care for children.

So Arnold is willing to not only sacrifice education, but now he wants to cutback on healthcare. And what’s more, he has just shown the world what a liar and backstabber he is.
