Some Thoughts for the 4th

This is a mass mailing that I received from my cousin. I think it is important to take pause on the anniversary of the birth of our nation, and think about what Thomas Jefferson had in mind when he penned the Constitution. Did he mean for it to be dismantled, based on the whim of some individuals? Would he and the others who crafted the foundation of our nation be happy to see the direction where we are heading? Would they really believe that curtailing the liberty and rights of ordinary and innocent citizens was really going to have any effect on terrorists and others who operate outside of international law?

Anyway, from my cousin:

As the conservatives find Gonazalez, a supporter of torture, too liberal on legal abortion to be a Supreme Court judge, I urge you to continue to think about the seriousness of where our country is heading. I know you share my concern. So continue to be alert especially on the issue of Reproductive Rights especially if you are the parents of a daughter (or a son) or the grandparents of a daughter (or a son), or if you have a niece (or a nephew) or if you are concerned about where the right wing is taking us. I know you know, but I will write it out so that you can send this to others.

ILLEGAL ABORTION is dangerous for every woman (and girl) of child-bearing age and not easy on the men who love their wives, daughters, granddaughters, and nieces and not easy on parents and grandparents who love their children and grandchildren, and not easy on those who love their nieces and nephews and friends.

MAKING BIRTH CONTROL ILLEGAL is dangerous for every woman (and girl) of child-bearing age and not easy on kind, caring, loving men and women and grandparents who love their children and grandchildren, and not easy on those who love their nieces and nephews and friends.

ALLOWING PHARMACISTS TO DECIDE WHAT PRESCRIPTION TO FILL FOR WOMEN in dangerous for everyone, women, girls, men, boys.

MAKING THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY ILLEGAL is dangerous for EVERYONE!!

So, I send this out to you on a holiday of great importance and urge that we all take serious action as two judges of the Supreme Court are about to be appointed

Happy 4th!

The is the holiday that my cats hate. At the first sound of a firework, they get really low, in combat position. At the firework, they take off and vanish, until the commotion is over. Last night someone was setting off fireworks, and the two of them vanished for most of the evening.

So 229 years ago, the colonies declared their independence from King George of England. It is often left out of history textbooks, or at least, the ones I had to suffer through when I was in school (boring beyond boring), that many of the colonists had no desire to be “free.” They want to live under English rule and not “rebel” rule.

Another point to ponder. If we apply today’s criteria to George Washington and all of his officiers, then they were terrorists of the highest order. When does a terrorist become a hero? Obviously, the British didn’t think highly of GW, and considered him a scoundrel worthy of execution.

On that note, enjoy the fireworks and your barbecue or however you spend the 4th.
